The New Croton Dam
Saturday, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Popular speaker Carl Oechsner – author and president of the Croton Friends of History – leads a walk into the past.  Assemble at the Croton Free Library at 2:00 p.m. for a brief overview of New York City water issues during the colonial period and the building of the first Croton Aqueduct.  Carpool to the far side of the Croton Dam.  The majority of walk will be down to the base of the New Croton Dam (1907) for discussion focusing on the time period of 1842 to 1910, which includes the construction of the dam along with development of the reservoir system up into Putnam and Dutchess Counties.  Walkers reconvene at the library at approximately 4:30 p.m. for convivial discussion.  Comfy walking shoes recommended!

FILM

Fan Film Festival with Author Clive Young
Wednesday, 7:30 pm

Join us for two Wednesday evenings of “fan films,” hosted by Clive Young, pop-culture critic, internet expert and author.  Today, many fans of the movies are using home video cameras and powerful home computers (for editing and special effects) to produce creations that rival original films. Clive Young screens them the way they were meant to be seen, in full-quality video.  All material is family-friendly, but discussion is aimed primarily at adults and teens.

First, Homemade Hollywood: Fans Behind The Camera traces the history of "fan films," an underground movement in cinema. This program presents some of the best fan films around. . . movies featuring Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter, Superman, Darth Vader and more! Additionally, we'll explore the history of fan films from the 1920s to today, and see what compels these budding filmmakers to invest so much effort into their personal visions of these popular characters.
Wednesday, April 30, 7:30 p.m.

Second, May the Fan Film Be with You presents over a dozen of the best Star Wars fan films.  These high-quality, short movies have been made by independent filmmakers around the world, often taking a comic view of George Lucas' saga or expanding upon the original films with new stories. They have proven so popular that Lucasfilm now holds a fan film contest every year; this program will screen many of the contest's award-winners, including some of George Lucas' favorites!
Wednesday, May 7, 7:30 p.m
