The Taconic Opera is returning to the Croton Free Library!
The Taconic Opera opens its season with performances from the New York Opera Conservatory, the company’s young artist summer program. Four casts of two operas are performed free of charge.
The first opera of the season — Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi — takes place in the Middle Ages and tells the story of a Count seeking revenge for the loss of his brother, who was killed as a baby by the traveller Azucena. Manrico, raised by Azucena, is the mortal enemy of the Count, yet both have fallen in love with Leonora. From a purely vocal standpoint, the opera is considered by many to be Verdi’s best bel-canto opera. The singing is extravagant and challenging. It features the famous Anvil chorus, Azucena’s “Condotta” and Manrico’s soaring “Di quella pira.”
